When the time comes to replace your old roof there are several important factors to consider (finding a trustworthy and reliable roofing contractor is usually near the top of the list).
But for fun, let’s assume all of the other pertinent details have been decided already and now it’s officially time to pick a shingle!
In the roofing industry, GAF is the brand name similar to what Nike and Under Armour are to athletic apparel.
Each roofing manufacturer has several ‘lines of shingles’ inside each brand of shingles, and they are all made using a combination of fiberglass and asphalt.
As confusing as that might sound (even while I write this) – my goal here is to make things a little easier to understand! So without further ado, here’s the list of different roof shingles available…
Traditional or ‘3-Tab’ – GAF’s line of shingles is called Royal Sovereign:
The lowest level of roofing shingle available – typically called ‘3-tabs’ by roofers because each shingle has three individual tabs that are 12” wide.
They appear flat on the roof because they are only a single layer thick. With roofing manufacturers slowly reducing both production levels and color choices, they might get completely phased out in the near future (my opinion).
Dimensional Shingles, AKA – Laminated Shingles, Architectural Shingles, or 3-D Shingles.
Originally introduced in the 1980’s for the high-end home market, homeowners wanted an asphalt shingle product that had the architectural appearance of slate and cedar shingles, but without the maintenance.
Architectural shingles have two layers of asphalt and fiberglass bonded together giving the entire roof a 3D looking appearance.
GAF’s line of dimensional shingles is called Timberline. There are (4) different versions of GAF Timberline available in our area.
GAF Timberline 'Natural Shadow'
GAF’s entry-level dimensional shingle is called Natural Shadow, which I typically describe as ‘toned down’ (has a mostly uniform appearance). Designed for homeowners looking for functionality without the extra color variations that dimensional shingles are known for. GAF’s Timberline Natural Shadow is warrantied against algae discoloration for 10 years and is available in (7) popular colors.
GAF Timberline HDZ
The most popular and best selling shingle in North America is GAF’s Timberline High Definition. Each shingle has a proprietary ‘shadow band’ (applied using computer-controlled ‘feathering’) which gives the roof added depth and a bold look. In 2022, GAF introduced StainGuard Plus Technology into the Timberline HDZ line, which warranties against algae discoloration for 25 years. Timberline HDZ is available in (14) colors.
GAF Timberline ArmorShield II
GAF’s Timberline ArmorShield II may look similar to a Timberline HD shingle, but look a little closer…Adding in a rubber-like polymer called SBS to the shingle production process increases both strength and flexibility. ArmorShield II Shingles are Impact-Resistant (IR) against hail which means up to a 25% reduction in homeowners’ insurance premiums!
GAF Timberline UHDZ (Ultra HDZ)
53% thicker than Timberline HDZ and featuring a ‘Dual Shadow Line’ that creates an ultra-dimensional, textured look that can take your curb appeal to even greater heights! In 2023, GAF introduced StainGuard Plus PRO Technology to their Ultra HDZ line, which warranties against algae discoloration for 30 years. Timberline UHDZ is available in 6 popular colors.
Designer Shingles
The modern day (affordable) upgrade from dimensional shingles that can drastically enhance curb appeal.
GAF’s ability to develop asphalt/fiberglass options that match the style and sophistication of wood, shake, and slate is unbelievable.
Designer shingles have a lot to offer for those willing to reach deeper into their pockets including a custom look, wider exposure, and added dimension.
The following designer shingles aren’t in stock at a local supplier but can usually be special ordered.
GAF Camelot II
A dimensional slate-like design with a wide (7 1/2″) exposure, GAF’s Camelot II Shingles provide style and beauty that was once only available to the rich and famous!
GAF Woodland
Designed after the look of random, hand-cut European shingles – GAF’s Woodland Shingles combine rustic charm with 21st century style
GAF Slateline
Featuring a patented extra-large shingle, bold shadow lines, and tapered cut-outs create “The Look of Slate At A Fraction Of The Cost” with GAF’s Slateline Shingles.
GAF Grand Sequoia
Artisan-crafted shapes combined with oversized tabs creates a classic wood shake look, without the necessary maintenence!
