Even in today’s DIY world with YouTube how-to videos, the joys of homeownership will eventually include the need to find reliable help.
When the time comes and you’re looking to hire a specific trade contractor (plumber, electrician, heating & cooling) or perhaps a ‘general contractor’ that provides multiple services, the process should be quick and painless right?
Doing a simple Google search of roofing companies near me will list dozens of so-called ‘professionals’ – all of whom claim they do exactly what you’re looking for! But how could you possibly know who to trust?
Contractors have developed an overall bad reputation (somewhat similar to con-artists or used car salesmen) which isn’t fair to us good guys!
Helpful Tips
-Ask family, friends, or a neighbor for a referral. If someone you know has recently had a new roof installed, they are usually willing to give their honest feedback and happy to share (assuming the project went smooth).
-After doing a Google search for local roofing companies near me, continue on by reading the reviews. Businesses that care about their reputation will have more positive feedback than the rest.
-Other local listing sites include: Yelp, Angie’s List and Home Advisor. Always look for company profiles with multiple positive reviews.
-Your local Chamber of Commerce might be able to point you in the right direction, either by phone or on their website.
-Check with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB was designed to help build trust between consumers and businesses by monitoring and mediating complaints filed.
-Before hiring a contractor of any kind, make sure they provide a current copy of the company’s trade license and proof of insurance. In Michigan, roofing contractors are required to have a Builder’s License and carry General Liability Insurance.
